Emma Rice and Kneehigh's production of Brief Encounter is to end its run in the West End almost two months earlier than scheduled.

The show was originally due to run from March to 9 September, after it extended a week longer than its original run date, but will now close on Sunday 22 July.

The piece is staged in the Empire Cinema Haymarket and is a recreation of Noël Coward's classic 1945 film, directed by David Lean. It follows Laura and Alec, who meet at a train station, fall in love and begin an affair.

Rice originally opened the stage version in 2007 at Birmingham Rep and a run at the Haymarket Cinema in London followed in 2008.

The current West End cast includes Isabel Pollen as Laura, Jim Sturgeon as Alex, Lucy Thackeray as Myrtle and Beverly Rudd as Beryl.

In his review for WhatsOnStage, Alex Wood called it a 'joy ride for punters looking for a master-crafted piece of storytelling.'

The show will be embarking on a world tour in 2019, with dates and venues to be announced.
