Caroline O’Connor will star in the Southwark Playhouse production of The Rink, which opens at the south London venue in May.

Directed by Adam Lenson and choreographed by Fabian Aloise, the musical follows an Italian housewife, Anna, who runs a roller-skating rink on the Eastern seaboard.

O'Connor currently stars as Countess Lily in the Broadway musical of Anastasia, and her previous credits include Nini in Baz Luhrmann's Oscar-winning film Moulin Rouge as well as Velma Kelly in Chicago on Broadway and Mack and Mabel in the West End.

Kander and Ebb's musical originally premiered on Broadway in 1984 and starred Chita Rivera as Anna and Liza Minnelli as her daughter Angel. The Southwark production is the first London revival in over 20 years of The Rink, and O'Connor understudied the role of Angel in the 1988 production of the show.

Further casting for the show is to be announced.

The Rink runs at Southwark Playhouse from 29 May to 23 June with previews from 25 May.
