Key North-East Openings this May

OPENING 7 May 2011, ’Tis Pity She’s a Whore at West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Bound to each other through flesh and blood and by the death of their mother, siblings Giovanni and Annabella find solace in a passionate union. Promising to love only each other or die, they make a pact and seal it with a kiss. In a country subject to the full force of the Church, where punishment is handed out swiftly to atone for all sin, these young lovers have no choice but to hide their passion…

As potent today as it was in 1633, John Ford’s tragic love story is one of the most powerful and controversial ever written. Director Jonathan Mumby’s exhilarating new production is set in a corrupt and violent Italy during 1962. Designed by Mike Britton and featuring an original score by Dominic Haslam. OPENING 7 May2011, The Crucible by Arthur Miller at York Theatre Royal.

Known as one of the most outstanding plays of the Twentieth Century, York Theatre Royal open their ‘In The Round Ensemble’ season with Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

Miller’s classic is driven by its defence of the truth and pursuit of justice in a time of the Salem Witch Trial set in 1692. When a group of girls are discovered dancing naked in the woods late one night rumours of witch-craft and devil worshipping spread through the small community setting off a series of irreversible events that bring a thrilling and tragic conclusion…

Directed by Juliet Forster with Stephen Billington (Casualty) as John Proctor and Helen Kay (Emmerdale) as Elizabeth Proctor

OPENING 20th May 2011, Happy Days, by Samuel Beckett at Crucible Theatre.

Jonathan Humphreys directs a bold new 50th anniversary version of Samuel Beckett’s funniest play.

Pauline McLynn (Father Ted, Shameless, Jam and Jerusalem) stars as the irrepressible Winnie, in this extraordinary comedy about one woman’s determination to carry on against all odds.

The limited season continues until 4 June 2011.

OPENING 26th May 2011, Hobson’s Choice , by Harold Brighouse at Crucible Theatre.

Harold Brighouse’s brilliantly observed northern comedy about growing up, moving on and getting out is one of the most popular plays of the last century.

Widower Henry Horatio Hobson, bootmaker and widower is challenged by his increasingly independent daughters. When his eldest daughter decides to set up a business to rival his own, Hobson’s life is set to change forever…

Directed by Christopher Luscombe and designed by Janet Bird with a sizeable cast including Rod Arthur, Emily Aston,Cassie Atkinson, George Banks, Robin Cameron, Lennox Greaves, Sally Hodgkiss, Philip McGinley, Barrie Rutter, Zoe Waites, Sue Wallace and Harry Waller.

OPENING 26th May 2011, Marlene, by Pam Gems, directed by Chris Monks at Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Singer, actress, Hollywood star, glamorous beauty, wartime idol and cabaret performer, Marlene Dietrich was a showbiz legend.

Interspersed with much-loved songs of a bygone era, including You Do Something To Me, Le Vie En Rose, Lili Marlene and Falling In Love Again, Marlene is a moving celebration of the woman behind the myth.
