Even if Leicester Square’s Sound Theatre may be no more, at least one of its previous hits looks likely to have a future life. We hear that The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), the 2003 Off-Broadway hit that had its UK premiere at the Sound this past March (See News, 8 Mar 2006), may well return to the London stage this Christmas, for a festive run at the King’s Head Theatre in Islington. In the comic satire of musical theatre genres, one story becomes five musicals. June, an ingénue who can't pay the rent, is threatened by her evil landlord. Will the handsome leading man come to her rescue? This basic plot is musicalised care of first Rodgers and Hammerstein, then Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kander and Ebb. The original London cast, directed by Julian Woolford, featured Joanna Ampil, Geoffrey Abbott, Susannah Fellows and Ian McLarnon, some of whom are expected to reprise their performances for the return dates.
