Opening: Dolly!, Confusions & Edinburgh Festival

Amongst the major London openings – in the West End and further afield – this week are:

OPENING TONIGHT, Monday 10 August 2009 (previews from 30 July), Samantha Spiro takes the title role in Jerry Herman’s classic Broadway musical Hello, Dolly! at the Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park (See News, 20 Apr 2009).

The revival, which rounds off this year’s Open Air season, is directed by the venue’s artistic director Timothy Sheader and choreographed by Stephen Mear, who collaborated on last year’s musical Whatsonstage.com Award-nominated revival of Gigi, and continues until 12 September.

OPENING THURSDAY, 13 August 2009 (previews from 11 August), Alan Ayckbourn‘s collection of loosely-linked comic one act plays, Confusions, is revived at the Union Theatre, directed by Ben De Wynter. Until 29 August.

OPENING FRIDAY, 14 August 2009, the 63rd Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) launches, centred on a theme of ‘enlightenment and homecoming’ (See News, 25 Mar 2009).

This year’s theatrical highlights include the world premiere of Rona Munro‘s The Last Witch, a festival residency for Dublin’s Gate Theatre celebrating the 80th birthday of Brian Friel and a radical reimagining of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan by New York’s Mabou Mines company. Running at theatres, opera houses and concert halls across Edinburgh, it continues until 6 September.
