The Shoehorn Sonata is an uplifting and moving tale of courage and comradeship between two women – an Australian nurse and a British schoolgirl – who forged a bond of friendship whilst imprisoned in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in the Sumatran jungle in 1942. The two women are drawn together fifty years later by a film-maker for a reunion and are forced to confront the past. Through poignant and painful memories, laughter and tears, they rekindle their friendship and embark upon a fascinating story which is testament to the human spirit. At the centre of their emotional reunion is a shoehorn that holds the darkest secret from the camps which has kept the pair apart for half a century.
