LW Entertainment has partnered with animation production company Qubic Pictures to explore the creation of a new anime adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.

Qubic Pictures is led by Justin Leach, co-executive producer on Star Wars: Visions and showrunner of Netflix’s Eden and Leviathan, and works with creators and studios in Japan, North America and Europe.

Leach said the aim was to combine musical theatre with Japanese animation to create a work that would appeal to audiences worldwide while respecting the original story, adding: “This project is a rare opportunity to unite the grandeur of musical theatre with the artistry of Japanese animation – two beloved traditions that have touched audiences around the world.”

The project forms part of a wider series of film and television developments based on The Phantom of the Opera and other Andrew Lloyd Webber titles. Work also continues on the previously announced film adaptation of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, directed by Jon M Chu.

Furthermore, a multi-book publishing programme with Penguin Random House will launch in 2026, beginning with Our Strange Duet, a young adult novel by Erin A Craig retelling the Phantom story from Christine Daaé’s perspective.
