On this day in 1988, The Phantom of Opera had its official opening night at New York's Majestic Theatre.

Featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart and libretto by Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe, the piece has continued to be a Broadway sensation, running in tandem with its West End run (scheduled to begin again this summer).
