Rehearsal photos have been released of the comedy set in an old reggae record shop in Birmingham
Fresh from winning the Critics' Circle Award for his performance in Fences, Lenny Henry returns with a comedy set in an old reggae record shop in Birmingham – Rudy's Rare Records.
Owned by the irrepressible Rudy Sharpe (Larrington Walker), whose chaotic "if it ain't on the shelf, it's on the floor" style clashes with long-suffering son Adam's (Lenny Henry) love for order, the record shop becomes a battleground for both men.
When Adam's son (E4's Youngers and Mandem on the Wall star, Joivan Wade) comes back from uni, a whole new rhythm gets added to the mix! But when greedy developers spot the shop, father and son must put their differences aside and battle to keep the music alive.
Featuring music by Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, Bob Marley and The Sugarhill Gang – all played live by an onstage band.
Produced by Hackney Empire and Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Rudy's Rare Records runs in Birmingham from 4 to 20 September 2014 and at Hackney from 24 September to 5 October.
