The ”Wizard of Oz” star reveals the musical numbers she couldn’t live without
Sophie Evans became a household name when she appeared on Andrew Lloyd Webber's 2010 BBC talent show Over the Rainbow.
After making her West End debut in 2011 as Dorothy in Lloyd Webber's production of The Wizard of Oz, she has since appeared on stage in Irving Berlin: From Rags to Ritzes and on screen in Pride and The World's End.
Sophie stars in You Won't Succeed on Broadway If You Don't Have Any Jews, which opens at the St James Theatre on Tuesday.
We caught up with Sophie and asked her: "If you were stranded on a desert island, which five showtunes could you not live without?"
The words are absolutely beautiful. I sang this song at my year 11 leavers assembly and it was so emotional it's stuck with me ever since.
I saw The Lion King many years ago and the whole show is magical, especially the "Circle Of Life" scene at the beginning. I just love the song "They Live In You"! My boyfriend and I often sing this together in the car.
My first ever show was Annie at 6 years old. I didn't play Annie, I played an orphan, but I always loved the song "Maybe" and it brings back wonderful memory's of my amateur dramatics days!
Again from my Am Dram days! Carousel was my first look into the world of legit musicals and my dad was actually roped into this one. He played a suit of armour and Billy's dead body double, much to the amusement of the rest of my family. Even at the age of 9 I found this musical very emotive and singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" on stage with my dad is something that I'll always remember.
I couldn't pick a list of favourite showtunes without including this gem. It honestly is one of my favourites and I'm still not done singing it. I have the best memories of my life with this song. I've been so lucky to meet so many amazing people and do so many wonderful things and I owe it all to this song. It will always have a place in my heart.
You Won't Succeed on Broadway If You Don't Have Any Jews runs at the St James Theatre until 5 September. For more information and to book tickets, click here.
