The three-time Tony-nominated director chatted to WhatsOnStage last week
Director Jamie Lloyd has spoken to WhatsOnStage about his aspirations and hopes for the future of his organisation, the Jamie Lloyd Company.
Lloyd was nominated for his third Tony Award last week for his production of Sunset Boulevard, which plays on Broadway following a spell in the West End in late 2023. He described the nomination (one of seven for the show, following seven WhatsOnStage and Olivier Award wins) as “a huge surprise” and lauded the show’s monumental journey over the last 18 months or so: “there was such a cynicism, a scepticism about whether she was too young, whether she could really act, whether I’d do something weird with it… people were coming to early previews in London expecting a car crash.”
Lloyd has a busy remainder of 2025 coming up – currently in rehearsals for a new staging of Evita at The London Palladium, he will be back on Broadway alongside Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter for a revival of Waiting for Godot. Beyond that, he also continues work alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber on new musical The Illusionist, which will reportedly open in the latter half of 2026, according to the composer.

Lloyd reflected on the “amazing development for the Jamie Lloyd Company” over the last few years, following record-breaking stagings of shows like Much Ado About Nothing with Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell.
In terms of aspirations going forwards, Lloyd said that “we want to make work that’s from me, from the heart… but looking to the future, producing work by other directors, younger directors, other artists, more commissioning, thinking outside the box about where we make work, the kind of spaces we make work.
This could be a major new frontier for the company, but Lloyd emphasised that: “It’s not all about my work as a director, I’m looking forwards to producing other peoples work – which is definitely on the cards in the coming months and years.”
In the meantime, Evita, Godot and much more awaits.
