One of the biggest West End hits of recent years, Matilda, is one such show, and we’re delighted that following its huge success at last year’s Whatsonstage.com Awards, the RSC musical has now been nominated for seven Drama Desk Awards, which are produced by TheaterMania.
In this exclusive video, see the show’s star and Drama Desk nominee Bertie Carvel ‘interview’ songwriter Tim Minchin (nominated for Outstanding Lyrics) about the awards – do watch it right through, not only is it hilarious but Whatsonstage.com gets a name-check as well!
Formed in 1949, the Drama Desk Awards are the only major New York theatre honours for which productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway compete against each other in the same category.
Other Brits nominated this year include Vanessa Redgrave (for The Revisionist), director Emma Rice (for The Wild Bride), Kathryn Hunter (for Kafka’s Monkey) and Julian Sands (for A Celebration of Harold Pinter).
The 58th Annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony takes place 19 May 2013 at The Town Hall. Whatsonstage.com’s Terri Paddock and Michael Coveney will be flying to New York for the occasion, so be sure to look out for our coverage.
