Casting has been announced for the world premiere of Victoria: A Queen Unbound, a new play by Daisy Goodwin, creator of the ITV drama Victoria.
Set at Osborne House in 1901, the play follows Victoria in the final days of her reign as she reflects on her life through the diaries she kept. Her younger self appears and prompts her to confront memories and decisions from her past.
Amanda Boxer will play Victoria, with Jessica Rhodes as Young Victoria. The cast also includes Lydia Bakelmun as Beatrice and Steve Chusak as Dr Reid, with Stephen Fewell as Bertie and Rowan Polonski as Albert.
The creative team includes director Sophie Drake, returning to the venue after Charley’s Aunt, alongside set and costume designer Alex Berry and lighting designer Ben Jacobs. Asaf Zohar is sound designer and composer, Asha Jennings-Grant is movement and intimacy director and Elspeth Morrison is dialect coach. Casting is by Cydney Beech with Matthew Dewsbury as casting adviser.
The stage management team comprises company stage manager Kate Schofield, deputy stage manager Rachael Barber and assistant stage manager Grace Hancock.
Drake said: “We have brought together an extraordinary company of actors and creative team to bring Daisy Goodwin’s brilliant new play, Victoria: A Queen Unbound, to life. The play explores the complexity of how we choose to be remembered in the face of one’s own mortality, while delving into our enduring fascination with what unfolds behind the closed doors of Britain’s monarchy. I cannot wait for audiences to experience it.”
It will run at the Watermill Theatre from 27 March to 9 May. A national press night is scheduled for 31 March at 7pm.
Goodwin will be interviewed by historian Jason Goodwin after the performance on 21 April.
