A new all-male musical version of Romeo and Juliet is rumoured to be in development for a regional tour in 2011, prior to a possible West End transfer. Titled Romeo and Julian and featuring a score of ‘disco classics’ including “Knock on Wood”, “Relight My Fire” and “Love Hangover”, producer Jonny Andrews told Whatsonstage.com the show “will do for Shakespeare what Rent did for Puccini”.
It won’t be the first time the star-crossed lovers have been adapted for the musical stage – the most famous to date is of course West Side Story, which is also rumoured to be in line for a West End revival to mark lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s 80th birthday.
