Derby Theatre and Northern Stage will collaborate on a new production of Little Shop of Horrors, opening at Northern Stage from 8 to 23 May 2026 before transferring to Derby Theatre from 30 May to 20 June 2026.

The production, directed by Derby Theatre’s artistic director and CEO Sarah Brigham, will feature a company of actor-musicians and integrate creative captions throughout every performance. Artist Ben Glover will design captions inspired by B-movie aesthetics, aiming to make the show more accessible for Deaf and hard of hearing audiences while enhancing the production for all.

With music by Alan Menken and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, the cult musical follows flower shop worker Seymour who discovers a plant that feeds on human blood, leading to fame, fortune and deadly consequences. Songs include “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Suddenly Seymour” and “Feed Me (Git It!).”

Natalie Ibu, artistic director of Northern Stage, said the co-production will connect audiences in Newcastle and Derby, adding: “We’re bringing fresh energy and perspective to an iconic musical, with a talented company of actor-musicians and integrated design that builds on our shared commitment to accessibility and representation.”

Auditions will be held in Newcastle, Derby and London in October with the aim of securing representation from the North East and the Midlands in the cast.

Accessible performances at Derby Theatre include BSL-interpreted, audio-described, dementia-friendly and relaxed performances across June 2026.

The production is separate to another Manchester revival, opening in the autumn of 2026.
