A new musical adaptation of Practical Magic is in development, based on Alice Hoffman’s novel and the Warner Bros. film.

The stage production is being created by producers Stephanie and Nicole Kramer and Brian and Dayna Lee, with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures involved by special arrangement.

The musical will feature an original score by Norah Jones and Gregg Wattenberg. The book is by Hoffman and Peter Duchan, and the production will be directed by Maria Friedman. Mark Kaufman will serve as creative consultant.

Hoffman said of the new adaptation: “I’m so excited to be working with my amazing collaborators on bringing Practical Magic to the stage. This story of love and sisterhood is meant for the theatre. Music is the heart and soul of Practical Magic, you can hear it as you read the book, even though it isn’t there. Now you will finally hear the story as I always imagined it. You will hear magic.”

The story follows the Owens family, whose women have lived under suspicion in their Massachusetts community for more than two centuries. After being orphaned and raised by their aunts, sisters Sally and Gillian Owens attempt to distance themselves from a family curse.

Hoffman’s novel was first published in 1995 and became a New York Times bestseller. It was adapted into a film in 1998 starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Hoffman later expanded the story with further novels, including The Rules of Magic, Magic Lessons and The Book of Magic. A sequel to the film is scheduled for cinema release on 11 September 2026.

RCI Theatricals will serve as general manager for the stage production, which has yet to reveal where it might land.
