Harold and Maude will extend its run at the Charing Cross Theatre by six weeks, with new casting announced for the show.

The piece, based on the 1971 film written by Colin Higgins, originally opened on 26 February with Sheila Hancock and Bill Milner in the titular roles.

Taking over Hancock and Milner in the cast will be Linda Marlowe (Berkoff's Women, In The Bar of a Tokyo Hotel) as Maude, with Patrick Walshe McBride (Shakespeare and Hathaway, Peer Gynt) playing Harold.

The rest of the original cast will remain for the remainder of the season.

In her review of the show, critic Sarah Crompton described it as "an odd slice of whimsy which simultaneously satirises the beliefs and lifestyle of the time and celebrates its quirkiness."

The production has design by Francis O'Connor, costume by Jonathan Lipman, lighting by Matt Clutterham, sound by Andrew Johnson, composition by Michael Bruce and casting by Stephen Crockett for David Grindrod Associates.

Harold and Maude runs at Charing Cross Theatre until 12 May.
