While there are countless lists every year giving you top tips for the Edinburgh Festivals, who better to recommend what you should be doing than those who are literally there year after year. In our Edinburgh feature, we get big names to tell us what they're planning to see, where they want to eat and what to do of an evening. Here, comedy and stage star Mark Thomas gives us his suggestions.

Don't miss these:

Daniel Kitson. He is probably my favourite comic working at the moment. If I had to make a list it would be Bridget Christie, Shazia Mirza, Angela Barnes and of course Kitson. He is unique and every gig he does is too. But if you are only going to one gig and can't get into Kitson, head for Angela Barnes.

Best spot for a bite to eat:

Mosque Kitchen. Cheap and wonderfully cheerful. It is an institution. You also get to meet loads of mates and comics there. Veggie curry and eating from a formica table, what can go wrong.

Great call for an evening out:

North Berwick for a great afternoon. One of my favourite places ever. Walk on the beach. Fish and chips. Beautiful. But if you are insistent on the evening part of it… then Summerhall. Turn up and see what is on, laugh at crème brûlée being served from van and question why you have not had more performance art in your life.

Cheeky plug for your show:

Check Up: Our NHS at 70 is a mix of theatre, journalism, comedy and reportage. All about the NHS. It's quite a powerful show and I am dead pleased with it. Never done one quite like this before.
