Not to be outdone by the Tony Awards in New York, in Stirling Scottish drama critics got together last night to announce the winners for the third annual “Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland” (CATS). In the acting stakes, David Tennant won Best Male Performance for the revival of John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger at the Royal Lyceum in Edinburgh, while Christine Entwistle won Best Female Performance for The Wonderful World of Dissocia, written and directed by Anthony Neilson and premiered at last summer’s Edinburgh International Festival. The latter was one of five awards (fully half of CATS’ ten categories) for Neilson’s play, clearly the night’s big winner. It also scooped the prizes for Best Direction, Best Design, Best New Play and Best Theatre Production. According to the judges, “It's extraordinary for one production to sweep the board so comprehensively - but then it was an extraordinary production which richly imagined an important subject, using all the power of the theatre.”
