I had been puzzled as to why Charles Spencer had given Tiffany 's such a good review and Mother Courage such a bad one. But now we know. See Jeffrey Archer's blog:

30th Sept entry

So obviously the 'noise' in Mother Courage that was pretty loud and sounding before the play started getting louder as play began and then the raucous entry of Fiona Shaw on her cart kept him awake - hence irritable review.

Poor man, perhaps he should get a few early nights.

Note to self: Lynette reads Jeffrey Archer's blog.

Wedding's off.

(P.S. Lynette: are you suggesting that Charlie S was the good lord's somnolant guest? Not so, I think.)
With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

Lynette, I think you are a little confused. Re-read Archer's blog - he is NOT saying that Spencer fell asleep, he is just saying it's a tedious show which sent him (Archer) and his guest to asleep.

'NOOOOOOOOO Horror, horror, horror' she screams at her computer screen.

Someone told me to look at it, honest gov. Yes, I can see now that what Archer means is that as the play sent him and his guest to sleep he is wondering why Spencer gave it such a good review.
Well, my apologies to Mr Spencer ; I misread the blog. Note to self - must get eye test.

From tonight's Londoner's Diary in the Evening Standard:
QUOTE
Lord Archer noted on his blog that he was not alone in dropping off during Breakfast at Tifffany's as I mentioned yesterday. The novelist pleaded a long day of public speaking and writing for feeling so tired. However, I was wrong to infer from his comments that the man who also appeared to have fallen asleep next to him was none other than Telegraph theatre critic Charles Spence who gave the show four stars. Archer didn't name the guilty party and far from appearing to fall asleep Spencer couldn't keep his eyes off the ravishing star of the show Anna Friel as his review made clear. My apologies to both

I have a problem with Jeffrey Archer - how can I truly dislike someone who loves theatre (and cricket) as much as he does?

Well, in 2000 you could have gone to see his play "The Accused" and voted on whether he was guilty or not guilty.
I wouldn't say a word that could be reckoned as injurious,
But to find a mother younger than her son is very curious,
And that's the kind of mother that is usually spurious.

I expect that you've read one of his books! I use the word in the loosest sense of the word where a book equals some paper sandwiched between two hard covers!

Oh, I love Jeffrey Archer's writing. Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less, Shall We Tell The President and others are some of my absolute favourites, but as a person he makes me recoil.
