I thought some of you might be interested in seeing this 35 minute film at the Rose Theatre. Details HERE.
I popped along yesterday evening after my trip to the Old Vic.
Basically it is various actors filmed performing parts of Marlowe's work. They were obviously filmed on green screen then placed in a digital backdrop of the Rose Theatre. It's pretty basic stuff and quality is not good if you are used to big budget effects but still worth seeing for the performances which were given free to raise money for the Rose's plans to further excavate the theatre's foundations then cover with a glass floor and use for a theatre/museum/education.
Included:
Joseph Fiennes performingfrom Edward the Second.
Kevin McNally and Henry Goodman from The Jew of Malta
Anthony Sher performing from Tamburlaine
Alan Rickman (in black and thigh length boots, but I digress!;)) performing Massacre at Paris

Worth a look for £4.50

As it stands the Rose theatre site represents the most feeble and overvalued tourist "attraction" in London (I nearly wrote "in Europe" but of course the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen wins that award hands down). Standing in a damp dark cellar looking at a featureless patch of mud being exhorted to "just imagine" by some resting actor is surely no-one's idea of a good or interesting time. One wonders if those who contributed to the cause are happy enough with this outcome.

It is pretty typical that the archaeologists regard the site as their personal property and it suits them fine just to leave everything buried for reasons of preservation, but to then invite punters in to pay to look at it is really taking the mickey.

Well I have to say that I didn't even really see the hole! It wasn't lit when they let us into see the film.

Greetings to one & all. I've just joined the board & this is my first post. I saw the Christopher Marlowe film a few weeks ago & enjoyed seeing the performances. As regards the Rose theatre itself, the guide explained that there is going to more excavation of the site; hopefully starting by the end of the year & continuing for approximately 18 months. They are well aware that the site in its present condition is not acceptable as a tourist attraction, but there plans afoot to improve it enormously after the dig is complete. I enjoyed my visit to the Rose very much & I was impressed by the enthusiasm & dedication of the staff.
