Has anyone else noticed that CAM MAC is using rowan atkinson as his pull for tickets for oliver. Any bus in london that has an oliver poster on it, has staring Rowan Atkinson beside it. I seems like cam mac isn't suing the as seen on tv sort of ploy. Has he still not got over jessie not winning? Have his thoughts changed abut jodie yet?

It makes sense to me.

Everyone knows what Oliver and everyone knows who Rowan Atkinson is but may not have watched the tv show so Jodie would mean nothing, everyone who watched the show knows Jodie is in it so doesn't need reminding. Atkinson is a household name to non theatre go-ers.

I hope that made sense. haha.

I may bve wrong but I think what mjr is trying to point out is that the ads have no mention of Jodie OR the 3 Olivers.
While I understand that Rowan Atckinson will draw non theatre goers , surely that will apply to the likes of Burn Gordon who I would imagine would have a big following from Torchwood. I don't think it's fair that Jodie and the boys are being excluded from the advertising, surely maing them "names" was the whole point or why would they bother broadcasting the competition at all?

What you have got to remember is that a lot of these posters and the initial advertising started in advance of the winner/s of IDA were announced- also like others have said the public who watched the show need no reminding who is in it and that is why the show has sold so well!

And most people know that "some woman" from a tv competition show won the part... but they don't know Rowan Atkinson is also in the show.

With Rowan Atkinson so prominent on all the advertising, can I get a refund if I go and he's not on for some reason? Isn't that the reason Cameron's advertising never usually mentions any cast members?

The advertising on this production is exactly the same as for the Palladium revival i.e. the person playing Fagin is given billing. Then it was Pryce, Dale, Abbot etc.

Of course Rowan Atkinson is given prominence. Oliver might be the nominal lead, but the perceived lead has always been Fagin.

This is still supposed to be about "Oliver". It isn't just an extension of "I'd Do Anything". And having won the role on television doesn't magically transform the role of Nancy into the lead. No one has been "excluded" from the advertising and it won't have anything to do with preference re casting either. To have made it all about Jodie would just have been totally inappropriate! There is no doubt that she and the Olivers, and Burn Gorman as well, will all get interviewed a few times closer to staging, but in the meantime of course the advertising is focussing on Rowan Atkinson. And Gavin and others above were quite right in that anyone buying tickets only because of Jodie, or only becase of having watched the television show, won't need reminding that she is in it anyway. But Rowan Aktinson should attract another audience agan.

Also I should've thought it was obvious that RA will attract tourists because Mr Bean is so international and people who have never heard of 'IDA' will have heard of him. I haven't seen the buses - is he made up and dressed as Fagin in the ads?

Very well said!

I do however think that Cameron Mackintosh (full names don't take much longer to type and show much more respect!) is probably slightly disappointed at Jodie winning, I guess it's lucky that Nancy isn't the lead in the show!
