We're going to New York in October and have already booked shows via BroadwayBox.com. I am sure there are loads of good restaurants in the Broadway district offering pre-theatre meals.
Does anyone have any recommendations, is it necesaary to pre-book and if so is there a good website to use?

If you want to eat at somewhere like Sardis, Joe Allens or Angus McIndoe, you will need to book. I really recommend Angus (he used to work at Joe Allen) and if you're going to see GYPSY, his restaurant is right next door, so couldn't be better!

Most theatres in the Theatre District are between Broadway and Eighth Ave. Just one block west, Nineth Ave has wall to wall retaurants with every variety of cuisine and and you shouldn't find it hard to get a good meal there without booking.

PS! Another restaurant that I like is THALIA, on Eighth Ave (east side) at 50th Street. Best to book for this one. They also do a great Sat/Sun brunch (as does Angus McIndoe).

There are definitely lots of restaurants in the Broadway area, but you should probably call and reserve when you get to New York Most hotels will have visitors guides with ads and phone numbers--or you could ask the concierge to reserve for you.

I'm wanting to try that Angus McIndoe, as I've read good things about.

Last time I was in NY (last spring), I had a decent meal at Etcetera, Etcetera, on 44th (between 8th and 9th).

I've also eaten at Blue Fin in the W Hotel, Broadway at 47th.

If you're pressed for time, Sapporo, 49th and 7th, serves quick, cheap and authentic ramen (I like the shoyu ramen).

Thanks for the great advice. We pre-booked McIndoes which was very good if rather noisy. Much better than Gypsy which we saw, but Patti Lupone is clearly a Broadway phenomenon who does not translate to English tastes. Restaurant Row (W46th) also provides several good options and we particularly liked Fiorentina's, a very good Italian with an excellent pre-theatre menu.
