Except Hans Peter Janssens, does anyone know of any other baritones that have played Jean Valjean:)?

Henk Poort is a baritone. He played Jean Valjean in the first Dutch Les Mis production.

The second cover at the moment, Stephen John Davis is a baritone if that counts? Been lucky enough to catch him in the role and he was fantastic. Second best only to Hans Peter (sucker for baritones biggrin.gif).

You can't really fit this sort of part into a standard classical vocal spec. I personally think that the best JVs have had baritonal qualities to their voice which gave the part the necessary gravitas but they also had an extended upper register (including a full voice b flat) which not many baritones (apart from Simon Keenlyside or Sherril Milnes (in his prime) could aspire to.
Similarly Javert's vocal quality is that of the bass-baritone but again has tessitura that most classical singers of that fach would quail at!

Gyula Vikidál, the first Hungarian Valjean, is a baritone, too. (He was there from Hungary at the end of TAC.) Later he sang Javert - that fitted him better.
