I noticed that West Side Story is on at the Sadlers Wells Theatre in July & August but I cant see any mention of the cast. Is this just a dance version?

Also does anyone know if there are plans to give it a West End revival? I would love to see it.

It’s a proper staged version from the Chatalet in Paris. I think it’s also had a tour of the continent as well. It uses the original cheography (yay) and the original direction (yawn. I’m sure it was once was great but that was a long time ago).

WSS is receiving a revival in NY and Arthur Laurent’s has come up with a new version of it. The new version hasn’t been revealed yet but I have to say this show really needs it. I find the book scenes to be way too long and really could be trimmed down. Also some of Sondheim’s lyrics could do with tinkering (Do uneducated Porto Ricans speak like that? No.).

I feel WSS was written for people who didn’t have a clue about the pair of star crossed lovers but that was then and I feel you can now take some liberties with the text and edit scenes.

Still the score and context are astounding and I do feel it is one of the greatest musicals ever written.

The European tour is the one that's coming to Sadler's Wells. ATG are producing a tour of the show, but with a new cast.
whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should

Completely agree with you, Tulip, but I seem to remember reading Laurents state that his "new" version of (or concept for) West Side Story wouldn't involve changing a single word. Shame.

As for hauling out the old production, it wasn't THAT long ago we had a revival at the Prince Edward/Prince of Wales. Zzzzz...

Yet longer than since we last had a revival of Oliver......

There are recalls happening this week for WSS.
