Firstly, am I first on the new discussion board, feel very humble if I am ! Now onto Wicked ..... Congratulations, although I am not surprised. I think calling them the People Awards is a bit misleading, only a small % of the public know about WHats On Stage and the ones that vote are mainy Wicked Fanatics.

I think the show is passable, but would be nothing without the sets or costume, passable score, with ok lyrics and books.

Avenue Q was much more deserving as was Spamalot or Caroline or Change!

Rotten Tomatoes now please !

Yet another "Wicked" hater ! Although personally I agree - its not a great musical, but ever show has its moment. Lets hope Q wins Olivier !

Box office is best ever @ Q! which is encouraging ! Do we know who is staying or going? I heard most are staying. Except Giles & Naoko - is that right?

As with all polls like this, Wicked is 'Most Popular Musical' rather than 'Best'. I doubt all the people that voted for it had seen all of the other shows on the list, so that would skew the result a little...

Hmm..wouldnt be anything without the score, book, set, costumes, lyrics....... anything left ?! Oh, and yes, I have seen all the shows on this years list (and more) and Wicked has it hands down. Still, the jealousy will continue, no matter how many awards, and how many people like it....

It will only win this one Award - it never won the Tony ! Avenue Q did.

I felt the score, lyrics and book were really weak - apart from Idina it sucked .... like life on Avenue Q

I liked Wicked and am seeing it again in couple weeks, however I personally didnt thinkits the best new musical, for me thats Avenue Q. But Im not surprised it won, and fair play to it. Its in a huge theatre with a huge following, way more people will have seen it than will have seen Avenue Q so the odds were always in its favour.

what I do think is completely ridiculous is Miriam Margoyles winning best supporting actress! It wasnt a challenging role (she didnt even sing what parts she had) and as good as she was, she was basically a panto villian. How she could win over Sheila Hancock!?!

rant over! smile.gif

I'll just copy and paste what I said on Dress Circle:

[A poll like this] can't possibly find the 'best' (a subjective term) especially as more people probably saw Wicked in it's preview period than attended the whole run of Sunday in the Park... so it's sweeping 'success' is not a huge shock. Like Pop Idol and the political process, it's merely a popularity contest...

Personally, I don't care if it won or not as I don't set any store by these kind of things. Just pointing out that there is no real answer to any best/worst debate that can be justified by citing these 'awards'... wink.gif

True though this may be, surely in itself, that's quite telling...?

The people on these boards may not be entirely representative of the population as a whole, but of theatregoers, it's probably a fairly accurate cross section - if a large number are 'Wicked Fanatics', surely that says quite a lot about the show's popularity?

EVERYONE is talking about this show. People who have no idea about musicals, or Stephen Schwartz, or Idina are talking about this show, seeing it and wanting to go back!

What awards DO count? People scoff at the WoS awards because they're populist, but then they scoff at the Oliviers because they're too snobby! Maybe we just shouldn't bother at all, and leave all the incredible work in this industry to go unnoticed instead?

whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should

1st of all , just from your profile pic, one would deduce you are a fan !

2nd - Not everyone is talking bout Wicked !!! Many dislike it, not a feeling I get from friends who have seen the Q
