So, are they sticking with their policy of staging new writing only ? Seems like an odd appointment if they are.

Well yes, obviously I agree, the place has been hopeless since Michael Attenborough went there in 1984. Their only recent successes have been revivals of their past hits - now they have been reduced to acting as a receiving house for the RSC's new plays that aren't good enough to fill the Courtyard.
