WOS TV: Our Top Theatre Video Picks - 29 Oct 2008
The Whatsonstage.com Television channel is a rapidly expanding archive of theatre-related video content. As well as our exclusive first night reports, we regularly add show trailers, event promos, interviews, video diaries, behind-the-scenes footage and some hysterical “best of the web” gems, all handpicked by us. Below is a selection of some of our favourite recent additions…
Show Trailer – La Clique - For those who haven’t made it along to the Hippodrome yet to see La Clique, here’s a taste of what you’re missing. Combining circus, variety, burlesque and cabaret, this impossible-to-define but utterly compelling show is visiting London for the first time, and features a cast including Scandinavian contortionist Captain Frodo, striptease sensation Ursula Martinez and record-breaking sword-swallower Miss Behave.
Blast from the past - La Cage aux Folles - With the Menier Chocolate Factory revival about to open in the West End (See News, 29 Aug 2008), here’s a clip of the original 1987 London cast of drag musical La Cage aux Folles performing at the 1987 Olivier awards featuring Denis Quilley, George Hearn, and Jonathon Morris.
Spring Awakening at the Tonys - And just for good measure, here’s a clip of another soon-to-be-opening West End show performing at an awards ceremony, this time Spring Awakening. Opening at the Lyric Hammersmith early in the new year, the alt-rock musical about adolescent sexual awakening won eight awards at the 2007 Tony awards, where the original Broadway cast performed following an introduction by self-confessed “musicals fan” Zach Braff.
Frost/Nixon trailer - We actually featured this a few weeks back, but it felt appropriate to give it another showing in light of the film’s critically-lauded premiere earlier this month at the London Film festival (which was attended by Sir David Frost himself). Based on the 2006 Donmar Warehouse production and starring original cast members Michael Sheen and Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon tells the story of Frost’s series of television interviews with the disgraced former President back in 1977. The film will be in cinemas early next year.
Show Trailer – To Be Straight With You - Award-winning and ever-compulsive physical theatre company DV8 bring their new show to the National this week. Directed by Lloyd Newson, To Be Straight With You is billed as a “poetic but unflinching exploration of tolerance, intolerance, religion and sexuality” and incorporates dance, text, documentary, film and animated projections.
