Fellowes & Warchus on board for Slumdog Millionaire musical?

Julian Fellowes may not seem the most obvious choice to pen a musical set in the Indian slums, but the Downton Abbey scribe has apparently been signed up to pen the book for a forthcoming stage adaption of Danny Boyle‘s Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

According to the Daily Mail, Whatsonstage.com Award-winning Matilda director Matthew Warchus has been asked to direct the show, with deals currently “being discussed”.

The 2008 film centres on a boy who wins his freedom from a life of poverty by appearing on the Indian version of TV quiz show Who Wants to be a Millionaire?. Starring Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, it was adapted by Simon Beaufoy from Vikas Swarup’s novel Q&A.

Fellowes, whose other credits include Gosford Park and The Young Victoria, is also currently working on a musical adaptation of The Wind in the Willows with George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
