Laura Donnelly, Miranda Raison and Dominic West will star in Jez Butterworth’s new play The River, which premieres in the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court from 18 October to 17 November 2012.

The play, Butterworth's first since his smash hit Jerusalem, centres on a man and a woman during a moonless night in a "remote cabin on the cliffs".

The River reunites the creative team behind Jerusalem, led by director Ian Rickson and designer Ultz.

Dominic West’s theatre credits include Butley (West End), The Seagull (Old Vic), As You Like It (West End), The Voysey Inheritance (National), Rock ‘n’ Roll (West End) and Life is a Dream (Donmar). On screen, he's best known for playing the character of Jimmy McNulty in HBO drama series The Wire from 2002 to 2008.

Laura Donnelly’s most recent credits include Philadelphia, Here I Come (Donmar), Judgment Day (Almeida), Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Regent’s Park Open Air).

Miranda Raison’s most recent theatre credits include The Physicists (Donmar), Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII (Shakespeare’s Globe). On screen, she played Jo Portman in Spooks from 2005-9.

Jez Butterworth has a long association with the Royal Court stretching back to his award-winning 1995 play Mojo. Subsequent plays for the venue include The Night Heron, The Winterling and Jerusalem, which transferred to the West End and Broadway.

The Court caused some controversy by announcing that tickets for The River will not be on sale in advance, but will instead go be sold online at 9am the day of performances, with an allocation being sold at the venue box office an hour later.
