Shakespeare in Love

About the Show

Plagued by debt, tormented by writer’s block and in desperate need of a new hit, promising new playwright Will Shakespeare finds his muse in the form of passionate young noblewoman, Viola De Lesseps. Their forbidden love soon draws everyone, including Queen Elizabeth herself, into the drama and inspires Will to write the greatest love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet.

We have a top cast – a mix of professional and superb amateur – costumes from the RSC and instruments from the Early Music Shop – there’s an actual hurdy gurdy! And two students from the Royal College of Music are coming up to join the band. The black box studio – Theatre@41 – is York’s answer to the Menier and will be transformed into a Globe style performance space. Close your eyes and you’re in Elizabethan London.
