Eleven months since she moved her family to the UK from Somalia, Ayan is trying her best to find her feet in this new country, with its unfamiliar culture, language and social system. She is grateful to have found what she believes to be a safe home for herself and her children, and assumes her eldest son, Yusuf, feels the same way. However, Yusuf is on his own journey, and it’s one that Ayan finds it difficult to understand. Ubah (Flower) in Prison is a play about a mother’s struggle to do what is best for her family and to be there for a son who is trying to find himself in an environment where he feels out of place. From the same creators who brought you Arawelo.
Refugee Week is designed to celebrate the contribution of refugees within our communities, providing a better understanding of diversity between communities through performance art. As part of Refugee Week, there will be a special evening of performance at the Broadway, including moving Gospel singing, exhilarating drumming and a though-provoking play – Ubah in Prison.
