4 August 2010

It’s lunchtime at Soho Theatre’s café and science teacher turned comic Shazia Mirza is running late for our meeting. Since swapping Bunsen burners and conical flasks for comedy clubs and cheap hotels, Mirza has built up a strong following for her brand of personal and honest social commentary. It’s no surprise she writes a weekly column in the Guardian.

When she eventually arrives Mirza seems distracted: the impending pressure of Edinburgh is looming and preview performances are in full swing. But refreshingly she doesn’t desperately try to shoehorn in jokes from her act into our conversation as comedians often do. Instead she happily divulges details of her current controversial relationship: with an Irish atheist. What will her parents say?

Shazia Mirza‘s show, Multiple Choice, can be found at the Gilded Balloon Teviot, 4-30 August at 21.00
