A London theatre’s curtain call

A new reality series set in London’s theatreland is in development, bringing together West End and television talent.

Producer Thomas Hopkins has partnered with television producer Charlotte Fitzgerald to create West End Girls, a docu-soap following performers working in the capital’s theatre industry. The project is being developed under Hopkins’ banner End Card.

The series will focus on a group of leading women navigating careers, competition and personal lives within the West End, with a format that combines backstage access and ongoing storylines with a performance element building across each episode. It is described as a character-driven format set against one of the most high-pressure performance environments.

Casting is currently underway, with Emmy-nominated casting director Rob Kelly attached to assemble the ensemble for the first season.

Hopkins explained the premise: “We started working on this project during Covid in 2020, when we were collaborating with some of the West End’s highest profile performers and creatives and a dame or two (and that’s not a panto dame!). From there, we began shaping West End Girls, and we are now in full development on the pilot, which will start shooting in London this summer, with some of the biggest names in the UK theatre industry already attached.”

Fitzgerald, whose previous credits include work with Lime Pictures, Studio Lambert and Ricochet, added: “Having worked on shows like The Only Way Is Essex and Club Reps, I have always been drawn to big personalities and real lives unfolding on screen, but theatre has always been a personal passion of mine. This project is a real dream, because it allows us to go beyond the spotlight and show what life is like behind the footlights.”

West End Girls is currently in development, with plans for a pilot episode and a live stage component. The production is being made by West End Girls Ltd, with the title registered as a UK trademark.
