The Generation of Z: Edinburgh (Edinburgh Fringe)

New Zealand theatre company Royale Productions brings this immersive Zombie experience to the Fringe

Immersive theatre is all the rage, with companies like Punchdrunk, Theatre Delicatessen and Shunt who have been leading the way for quite some time now. But move over pommies, the Kiwis are here to show us how its done.

The Generation of Z: Edinburgh takes place during a Zombie apocalypse where Martial Law has been imposed and the human race is threatened with extinction.

No expense is spared as military personnel screech into the car park on a humvee complete with mounted machine gun and proceed to lead you through the abandoned building dodging Zombies and assisting in their mission. Painstaking attention to detail and effective sound and lighting combine with realistic weapons and explosives to put you right at the heart of the action, fourth wall, what fourth wall?

The plot is unavoidably yet understandably thin considering the running time – which is just over an hour – and for the same reasons there is no real character development.

But that doesn't matter, this is without a doubt the most spine-tingling, hair-raising, adrenaline-filled 80 minutes you will have in Edinburgh this year.

The Generation of Z runs at Assembly George Square until 25 August.
