The new revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has announced even more casting.
The multi-award-winning musical by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, based on an adaptation by Christopher Bond, follows a barber hell-bent on revenge.
It was announced as part of a whopper new season from Birmingham Rep. Find out more about other shows on offer here.
Sweeney Todd will be directed by the Rep’s artistic director Joe Murphy and feature design by Elin Steele, with musical supervision by John Rigby and casting by Abby Galvin.
Set to star will be Ramin Karimloo, taking on the role of the tortured Barber, while joining him is Meow Meow, taking on the role of Mrs Lovett.
It is revealed today that Olivier Award-winner David Bedella will take on the role of Judge Turpin. More names will be revealed in due course. Bedella said today: “What an exciting opportunity this is for me; not just revisiting Sweeney Todd 12 years after playing the role myself but taking on a new role alongside two of the greatest voices in live performance today. It’s absolutely thrilling.
“I’ve admired the work of Meow Meow and Ramin for so long. To be exploring this genius musical theatre opera in the company of these two fantastic performers is quite simply an embarrassment of riches. I am as grateful as I am fortunate and I’m chomping at the bit!”
The revival will play across the summer from 4 July to 9 August 2026.
Further casting and creative team are to be confirmed.
