Artistic director and joint chief executive of Soho Theatre Steve Marmion is to leave the venue in the new year.

Marmion joined Soho Theatre in 2010 and has overseen an annual audience growth from 90 thousand to 230 thousand.

He took over the role from Lisa Goldman and his credits as director include The One, Blueberry Toast and Vulcan 7. He plans to pursue his freelance career as a director and writer.

Marmion said: "It is with excitement and pride I leave my role at Soho Theatre. The excitement is at the prospect of space to write, time to collaborate, the new audiences I will meet and in the new year the ambitious new production and education company.

"The pride comes from what we have achieved together at Soho by being brave and imaginative."

Nick Allott, chair of Soho Theatre, said: "Steve Marmion joined Soho Theatre eight years ago and, in partnership with Mark Godfrey and his team, began a transformation that has seen the theatre's reputation grow nationally and internationally. The theatre has never felt more vibrant than now."
