The cast of Starter for Ten have taken part in a fun quiz!
Based on David Nicholls’ bestselling novel (which was adapted into a much-loved film in 2006), the musical will return to Bristol Old Vic from 10 September to 11 October 2025 before transferring to Birmingham Rep from 22 October to 1 November.
Set in 1985, the musical follows eighteen-year-old Brian Jackson as he leaves Southend to begin university life in Bristol. With dreams of appearing on University Challenge and a passion for Kate Bush, Brian soon learns that academic knowledge doesn’t always prepare you for growing up or falling in love. Adapted from Nicholls’ novel and the 2006 film, the musical was nominated for Best Musical Production at the UK Theatre Awards in 2024.
Mel Giedroyc will reprise her roles as Irene Jackson and quiz show sidekick Julia Bland, while Adam Bregman returns as Brian, joined by Miracle Chance as Lucy and Will Jennings as Patrick.
WhatsOnStage Award winner Stephen Ashfield joins the cast as both Bamber Gascoigne and Dave Jackson. Asha Parker-Wallace will play Rebecca, Rachel John takes the role of Dr Bowman, and Christian Maynard appears as Spencer. Imogen Craig makes her professional debut as Alice. The cast is completed by Michelle Bishop, Luke Johnson, Kwamé Kandekore and Laura Dawn Pyatt.

The musical features a book and lyrics by Emma Hall and Charlie Parham, and music and lyrics by Hatty Carman and Tom Rasmussen. Parham also directs the production. The creative team includes Alexzandra Sarmiento as choreographer, Lee Newby as set and costume designer, Zoe Spurr as lighting designer and Rob Bettle and Sam Clarkson for Sound Quiet Time as sound designers. Will Burton for GBC is the casting director, with Kate Waters as fight director, Nick Barstow as music supervisor, vocal arranger and contributing composer, and Tom Kelly as orchestrator.
