Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim’s musical will be performed at this year’s Proms
The authorised concert version of West Side Story will be performed as part of this year's Proms at the Royal Albert Hall on 11 August, it has been announced.
Conducted by John Wilson and featuring the John Wilson Orchestra alongside students from ArtsEd and Mountview, it will be the first time the complete musical has been performed in concert in the UK.
The cast is set to feature Sierra Boggess (Phantom of the Opera) as Maria, and Broadway actor Ross Lekites (Frozen, Kinky Boots) as Tony, with further 'top-flight' casting to be announced.
In other Proms news announced today, John Wilson will also conduct On the Town on 25 August – what would have been Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday.
Recently seen at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, the musical features classic songs including "New York, New York" and "Lonely Town".
The company will feature Nathaniel Hackmann (Les Miserables, Broadway) as Gabey, and Louise Dearman (Wicked) as Hildy. They will be accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra, with stage direction by Martin Duncan.
