Robert Icke’s new production is officially open at the Harold Pinter Theatre!

In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, Stranger Things star Sadie Sink and Hamnet standout Noah Jupe made their West End debuts last night, taking on the iconic roles of Juliet and Romeo, respectively.
Robert Icke’s new production of Shakespeare’s beloved tragedy celebrated its official opening at the Harold Pinter Theatre and WhatsOnStage was on hand to capture all the highlights and sit down with the two “star-crossed lovers” – alongside Clark Gregg (who plays Capulet) and Clare Perkins (as the Nurse) – at the show’s afterparty.
Find out what they had to say about any prior Shakespeare experience, the daunting task of leading a West End production and their thoughts on Icke’s introduction of the “Sliding Doors” effect in this new take in the video below:
The cast also includes Jamie Ankrah as Peter, Dylan Corbett-Bader as Benvolio, Eden Epstein as Lady Capulet, Alex Felton as Abraham, Ada Grey in the ensemble, Kasper Hilton-Hille as Friar John/Mercutio, Aruna Jalloh as Tybalt, John Marquez as Friar Laurence, Lewis Shepherd as Paris, David Shelley doubling as the Apothecary/Montague, Caroline Moroney as the Second Servant, and Alexander Uzoka as Gregory.
Joining Icke on the creative team are set and costume designer Hildegard Bechtler, lighting designer Jon Clark, sound designer Giles Thomas and video designer Ash J. Woodward. Casting is by Julia Horan and Jim Carnahan, with voice work supported by Penny Dyer and Nick Trumble.
The production also features fight direction from Kev McCurdy, with Jack Bradfield as associate director and Neetu Singh as assistant director. The wider team includes costume supervisor Sabia Smith, wigs, hair and make-up supervisors Campbell Young Associates, props supervisor Lily Mollgaard and production manager Kate West, alongside production drama therapist Wabriya King.
Produced by Empire Street Productions, the company’s recent work includes Elektra, Slave Play, and Prima Facie, which is touring the UK. As part of the run, the production will host The Star-Crossed Projects, a school’s initiative with ATG Entertainment Creative Learning offering workshops, tickets and performance opportunities for Key Stage 3 and 4 students.
Romeo and Juliet runs until 20 June, with tickets on sale now.
