Guests including Matt Smith, Daisy Lewis and Ian McKellen descended on the Shaftesbury Theatre on Sunday to help the National Youth Theatre celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The gala also saw stars including Timothy Dalton and Gina McKee appear on stage alongside 90 members of the NYT.

The event, called Story of Our Youth, looked at the entire history of the theatre company and featured performances from over 30 alumni.

Paul Roseby, the artistic director of the NYT, directed the show, which was part of the 60th anniversary programme, which also includes productions in the West End and on the fringe.

The National Youth Theatre was founded in 1956 and actors including Dame Helen Mirren, Daniel Craig, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Daniel Day Lewis all began their careers there.
