The Oscar nominations have been revealed, with a plethora of theatre-related films recognised.

Irish star Jessie Buckley, who has appeared in a raft of West End shows, picked up a nomination for her leading performance in Hamnet, with that film (based on the life of Agnes Hathaway, wife of playwright William Shakespeare), landing eight nominations total. Buckley’s co-star Paul Mescal missed out on a nomination, in a small shock result.

The other nominations were Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Casting, Best Director, and Production Design.

In something of a surprise, Wicked: For Good did not secure any nominations. Neither star, Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo, were recognised for their performances, while previous Oscar winners in the creative categories – including costume designer Paul Tazewell – were not recognised.

Stepping slightly beyond the theatre fold, Sinners led the afternoon with a record-breaking 16 nominations.
