Gerard McCarthy (pictured) will play George Bailey, the role created by James Stewart in Frank Capra's 1946 film classic, in an upcoming stage adaptation of It's A Wonderful Life.

Performed as a live radio play in front of a studio audience, It's A Wonderful Life will run from 9 December to 4 January at new venue the Bridge House Theatre SE20, and is directed by artistic director Guy Retallack.

McCarthy, seen on TV in The Fall, appeared as Fenton in The Merry Wives Of Windsor at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2010.

The rest of the cast features Sophie Scott, Kenneth Jay, Gillian Kirkpatrick, Daniel Hill and Danny Colligan.

According to press material, "It’s A Wonderful Life, by Tony Palermo, is a loving tribute to the golden era of radio and also beautifully captures the eternal comedy of Frank Capra's iconic Hollywood feature film."
