Sadly, I’m not able to attend the Edinburgh Festivals this year due to family commitments and logistical hurdles. While not dishing out the stars (there’ll be some lovely WOS critics doing that very soon!), it still felt vital to use WhatsOnStage’s channels to platform exciting work that those frequenting the Fringe may be interested in. So here’s eight days, 24 shows and some tentative recommendations.
Married indie-folk duo The Bengsons make their Edinburgh Fringe debut with Ohio, running 30 July to 24 August at Assembly Roxy. Directed by Caitlin Sullivan and produced by the Olivier Award-winning team behind Fleabag and Baby Reindeer, this intimate new musical tells Shaun Bengson’s true story of losing faith, finding music and facing degenerative hearing loss with radical hope.
Assembly Roxy (Upstairs), to 24 August
Maybe You Like It, Theatre Royal Plymouth and Pleasance unite for this new writing piece grounded in the story of the 1964 Great Alaskan Earthquake – the largest earthquake in US history. Tsunamis also caused damage in Hawaii and Japan. True stories and small-town communities coming together to overcome adversity are always ripe for stage adaptation (look at Come From Away), so this is certainly intriguing.
Pleasance Courtyard, to 25 August
Jack Holden, who wowed audiences with Cruise and Kenrex, has a busy year coming up for a large number of reasons. This Edinburgh, he takes on J M Barrie’s classic tale of an ageless boy, reinterpreted to add a dollop of club raving. It also has some of the biggest 2000s anthems from the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, and more – so it just feels like an ideal way to spend a night at the Fringe. To dance is an awfully big adventure!
Assembly Checkpoint, to 24 August
