Two shows at the Edinburgh Fringe have been cancelled after parts of the ceiling appeared to come loose in their venue during a show.

An eyewitness who was watching Milly Thomas' play Dust described the sound of something "dropping sporadically" throughout the performance of the play, which runs at Underbelly's Big Belly venue on Cowgate.

The source added "whatever was falling kept hitting the corrugated iron at the back of the stage." However the performance continued and members of the audience were ushered out by a venue technician at the end of the show.

A spokesperson for the Underbelly said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, this evening’s performances of The B*easts and The Black Cat in the Big Belly were cancelled. Towards the end of today’s performance of Dust, a small section of panelling in the venue became unattached.

"At no point was the safety of the audience in any question, and we have carried out all necessary repairs. The safety of all our patrons, performers and staff is of paramount importance and our primary concern. Customers with tickets to the affected performances have been informed and offered a full refund, or the opportunity to exchange their tickets for an alternative date. Performances will recommence at 8:45pm tonight."
