British talent features heavily in this year's Tony Awards nominations, announced at a ceremony in New York this week.

Cynthia Erivo is nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance in the Menier Chocolate Factory transfer of The Color Purple; Tim Pigott-Smith (King Charles III) is up against fellow Brit Mark Strong (A View From the Bridge) in the Best Actor in a Play category; Richard Goulding (King Charles III) is nominated in the Featured Actor in a Play category.

Home talent also did well in the design categories with Christopher Oram (Hughie), Es Devlin and Finn Ross (American Psycho) nominated for Scenic Design, and Tom Scutt nominated for his costume designs on King Charles III.

Rounding up an impressive list of British talent, directors Rupert Goold (American Psycho), Jonathan Kent (Long Day's Journey into Night) and John Doyle (The Color Purple) were also nominated.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's smash hit show Hamilton dominated the event with a total of 16 nominations. The Color Purple received a total of four nominations, equalling Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical stage adaptation of School of Rock and Sara Bareilles' Waitress.

Ivo van Hove's production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, which originally ran at the Young Vic before transferring to the West End and Broadway, received five nominations including Best Director for van Hove.

The awards take place on Sunday 12 June 2016.
