Full cast joining Josh O'Connor in Golden Boy revival at the Almeida revealed

Casting has been announced for the Almeida’s upcoming revival of Golden Boy, starring Josh O’Connor.

The award-winning performer returns to the stage, in this new production by Sam Yates, who will direct Clifford Odet’s American classic.

Set in 1930s New York at the height of the depression, the play follows gifted young violinist Joe Bonaparte, who finds himself lured into the brutal world of professional boxing.

The drama will feature a live string quartet and explore “ambition, identity, and the high price of success.”

O’Connor will be joined by Jason Barnett, Richard Fleeshman, David Ganly, Patrick Martins, Daniel Mays, Oliver Ryan, Hayley Squires, Stanley Townsend, Zubin Varla and Nicholas Woodeson.

On the creative team are set and costume designer Rosanna Vize, lighting designer James Farncombe, sound designer Dan Balfour, composer Isobel Waller-Bridge, video designer Jack Phelan, casting director Jim Carnahan and Alexandre Bleau, children’s casting director Amy Beadel, movement director Imogen Knight, fight director Kate Waters, orchestral manager David Gallagher, dialect coach William Conacher and associate director Yasmin Hafesji.

Golden Boy will play in London from 9 September to 31 October 2026. An opening night is set for 15 September. Tickets go on sale today.
