Back to the Future The Musical is set to embark on its first ever UK tour, opening in Bristol in October 2026 – and has added even more performances.
The production is based on the 1985 Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment film Back to the Future, which starred Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Dr Emmett Brown. Written by Bob Gale, the stage adaptation features new music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award winner Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard, alongside classics from the film such as “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B Goode.”
The musical continues to run in London’s West End at the Adelphi Theatre, where it is due to close in April 2026.
The initial set of tour dates was revealed last year, with new dates – Manchester Opera House (13 July to 21 August 2027) and Plymouth Theatre Royal (24 August to 11 September 2027) – confirmed last month.
Three further months of performances will take place at Birmingham Hippodrome (9 March to 10 April 2027), Alhambra Theatre, Bradford (11 May to 5 June 2027) and Wales Millenium Centre, Cardiff (19 October to 13 November 2027).
It has won multiple awards, including the WhatsOnStage and Olivier Awards for Best New Musical. Internationally, the show has been staged in Australia, North America, Japan and on Royal Caribbean Cruises. To date, it has been seen by over four million people worldwide.
The show is directed by Tony Award-winner John Rando, with set and costume design by Tim Hatley, choreography by Chris Bailey, illusions by Chris Fisher, lighting design by Tim Lutkin and Hugh Vanstone, sound by Gareth Owen and video design by Finn Ross. Musical supervision and arrangements are by Nick Finlow, with orchestrations by Ethan Popp and Bryan Crook, dance arrangements by David Chase, and casting by David Grindrod for Grindrod Burton Casting.
The original film, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025, grossed $360.6 million at the worldwide box office, with the trilogy earning $936.6 million in total (over $1.8 billion adjusted for today’s figures). The story of Marty, Doc Brown and the time-travelling DeLorean has since become a cultural touchstone.
