Andrew Lloyd Webber is working with Sarah Brightman to write songs that she can sing when she heads into space later this year.

The Lord is collaborating with Brightman on her new album, a "retrospective collection of music", and the former Cats and The Phantom of the Opera star is looking for music that is "beautiful and simple in its message" to sing from space.

Brightman is jetting off to the International Space Station on 1 September, and it is reportedly costing her £35 million. She will become the first professional musician to perform in space, and she has been in training for the voyage for two years.

Claims that the trip was a stunt to promote the album are untrue, Brightman claimed at a press conference today. "There are far better and much less expensive ways to do a PR exercise," she said at the event, which was hosted by Carol Vorderman.

It looks like Brightman really has lost her heart to a starship trooper.
