Barritt will use animation and live action in the world premiere of a new show in London
Paul Barritt, the co-director and co-founder of company 1927, is to stage the world premiere of a new show in June 2017.
Cat and Mouse follows Barritt's work on 1927's previous hits The Animals and Children Took to the Streets which ran at Battersea Arts Centre and the National Theatre, as well as Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.
The show will run at the Village Underground over two nights on 8 and 9 June. It is inspired by George Harriman's Krazy Kat cartoon strip from 1913 and will feature surreal and satirical animation from Paul Barritt. There will be a live band – The Officer Pup Band – as part of the show, while Lesley Ewen narrates the show and Octavia Austin has designed the costumes.
The production marks the east London Village Underground's first in-house production.
Barritt said: "Cat and Mouse began when dramaturg Beate Schüler contacted me asking if I would like to do a project based on the music of Harry Partch and George Harriman’s Krazy Kat. I’ll admit, I took the bait and ran with it…
"Expect high octane action, fun and frolics, extreme (cartoon) violence, moments of edification, sadomasochism, a face machine, skeletons, dogs, dancing, and more."
